The Barcelona Contemporary Art Tour is born

A proposal to approach art to the general public

di Flavia Cruciani

The association Art Barcelona presents the Barcelona Contemporary Art Tour, an initiative aiming to approach contemporary art to the city and its visitors by way of availing cultural venues engaged in excellent contemporary art.

The main cultural capitals of the world have already triggered such projects which encompass programming art galleries and art centres alike. According to Joan Anton Maragall, president of Art Barcelona, "it's a pioneering, stable and solid proposal aimed at citizens at large, be them local or from elsewhere; it's goal is to pinpoint and broadcast the proposals of thirty-six Barcelona contemporary art venues, both public and private."

The poles are differentiated by two colours: pink and blue, each corresponding to the typology subscribed by the centre. The pink one represents the galleries whilst the blue refers to museums, foundations and art centres. It is an interactive urban element which, right from the start, allows to identify the entire schedule programmed by all the centres featured in the Tour website simply by using the QR code and a contactless device accessible through smartphones. Later on, information will be provided by means of a mobile phone App in 3 languages (Catalan, Spanish and English), which will include geopositioning as well as a search tool with information regarding galleries, centres, exhibitions and artists.

The Tour will also be broadcast via publication of 50.000 guidebooks including a map of the parcours and the programme for individual venues. 30.000 copies shall be issued in English and 20.000 in Catalan, all of which are to be distributed in the 37 centres of the Tour, in 4 and 5 star hotels around Barcelona, tourist information points and prior to an agreement reached with certain cities, visitors will also have copies available at home before travelling.

The Tour is a private initiative which will last three years after which period it might be extended. The 240.000 euro budget has been financed up to 60% by Estrella Damm and DKV Seguros Médicos, and local institutional support (25%) from the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Catalan Government and the Barcelona Town Hall.

The spaces forming part of the Tour are the galleries ADN Galeria, Àngels Barcelona, Galeria Balaguer, Galeria Eude, Galeria Estrany de la Mota, Galeria Joan Gaspar, Galeria H2O, Kowasa Gallery, Galeria Miguel Marcos, Galeria Marlborough Barcelona, NoguerasBlanchard, N2 Galeria, Polígrafa Obra Gráfica, Galeria Joan Prats, ProjecteSD, Galeria Alejandro Sales, Galeria Senda, Senda- Espai 2nou2, Galeria Carles Taché, La Taché Gallery Barcelona, Galeria Toni Tàpies, Galeria Trama, Galeria Alonso Vidal, + R Galeria y 3punts Galeria, all of them in Barcelona andPalmadotze in Vilafranca del Penedès which also belongs to Art Barcelona; and the museums and contemporary art centresCaixaForum Barcelona, Museu Can Framis, La Capella, CCCB, Fabra i Coats - Centre d’Art Contemporani, Fundació Foto Colectania, MACBA, Fundació Joan Miró, Fundació Suñol, Fundació Antoni Tàpies and La Virreina Centre de la Imatge.
